Winnipeg ICE Announce Hockey Operations Staff for the 2020-2021 Season


Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeg ICE Head Coach James Patrick along with President, General Manager and Alternate Governor Matt Cockell announced the Hockey Operations staff for the 2020-2021 season.

Mel Davidson continues in her capacity as consultant with the Winnipeg ICE. Mel was a member and a coach of Team Alberta at the Canada Winter Games in 1991, 1995 and 1999. She spent three seasons as the head coach of the women’s hockey team at Connecticut College from 1997-2000. She was also the head coach of the Cornell University women’s hockey team from 2002-2005.  From 2006-2009 Mel served as the assistant coach of the Calgary Canucks in the AJHL.  Internationally, Mel has represented Canada at five Winter Olympics, three in a coaching capacity and two as a General Manager, bringing home four Olympic gold medals and one silver medal.

Josh Green rejoins the ICE after spending the season as the Head Coach and General Manager of the Winnipeg Freeze in the MJHL.  Green spent the 2019-20 season as the assistant coach of the Winnipeg ICE.

Green’s playing career includes five seasons in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Swift Current Broncos and Portland Winterhawks. A second round (30th overall) draft pick of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings in 1996, Green played parts of nine seasons in the NHL collecting 36 goals and 76 points in 341 games. He also played over 400 games in the American Hockey League and close to 280 games in Europe.

Ryan Guenter will be in the role of Assistant Coach for the Regina Hub.  Following the 2020-2021 season Ryan will begin his role as Manager of Scouting and Hockey Operations following his recent promotion.

Ryan’s career began with the Chilliwack Bruins (now Victoria Royals) in 2009 where he served as Senior Regional Scout, Provincial Scout (Alberta), and most recently Head Scout before joining the ICE last season.  Ryan played hockey at the collegiate level, earning two undergraduate degrees (BA, Psychology – BMgt, Human Resources) while playing for the University of Lethbridge men’s hockey team from 1998-2002. Ryan also received a master’s degree (MA, Sport Psychology) from the University of Alberta.

“Ryan works closely with Jake Heisinger (VP of Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager)  supporting our prospects and player development programs.  Given the uniqueness of this season, his knowledge of our young players and continuity will be valuable for our staff.” Mentioned James Patrick, Head Coach.

The Winnipeg ICE also announced that Byron Spriggs will serve as the goaltending consultant for the club.  Byron played for the Winnipeg Blues of the MJHL for three seasons. In his last year with the Blues (2013-14), they won the MJHL Championship where Byron was named Top Goaltender and awarded Playoff MVP. Spriggs then went on to play at the University of Manitoba, where he completed an impressive 5-year CIS career. Byron was named the team’s MVP for 3 years in a row (2016-2019).   He has served as the goalie coach with the Bisons Men’s Hockey Team for the last two years and is expected to continue in that capacity while working with the ICE.

Cole Hillier joins the team as the Head Equipment Manager.  Prior to joining the ICE, Cole served as the Head Equipment Manager for the Jacksonville Icemen in the East Coast Hockey League.  Darcy Ewanchuk remains with the team in a consulting capacity.
