ICE advance to Eastern Conference Championship Series

The Winnipeg ICE erased a 2-0 deficit in the opening period and went on a 6-3 victory over Moose Jaw Friday night to eliminate the Warriors 4 games to 1 in their Eastern Conference Semi Final series.

Ryder Korczak and Thomas Tien put the visitors in front, however a goal by Winnipeg’s Zach Benson with 2:56 remaining in the first period sparked the ICE.

Matthew Savoie, Cole Muir, Conor Geekie scored to give the ICE their first lead of the game in the second period.

Atley Calvert got the Warriors back to within one late in the period.

Savoie’s second of the game and Mikey Milne’s short handed empty net marker in the final frame sealed the victory.

Winnipeg outshot Moose Jaw 28-26.  Savoie led all players in the game with 5 shots.

Daniel Hauser made 23 saves for the ICE while Carl Tetachuk stopped 22 for the Warriors.

The ICE now host the Edmonton Oil Kings in the WHL Eastern Conference Championship series starting Friday, May 20 at the ICE Cave inside Wayne Fleming Arena. Game 2 follows Saturday night. Both games start at 7:00. The series will then shift to Edmonton for Games 3, 4 and 5.  Winnipeg will host Games 6 and 7. The remainder of the schedule will be released at a later date.
